UAE Car History Check: Records to Review Before You Buy
Check a used car's VIN, official accident enquiries and Dubai history records. Understand owner consent, missing data and what to verify before paying.
A UAE car history check helps you compare the seller's account with available records. Start with the chassis number, use official enquiries, then review service and repair paperwork. No single result proves a car is accident-free or gives a complete record of its life across all emirates and overseas.
Keep three checks separate: history records describe the past; a pre-purchase inspection examines present condition; a statutory test supports the relevant licensing transaction. Use the pre-purchase inspection versus RTA test guide when arranging the physical checks.
1. Confirm the car's identity and get permission
Ask the seller for the full vehicle identification number (VIN), also called the chassis number, and permission to use it for purchase checks. Compare the registration card with the identifiers on the car, using the manufacturer's stated locations. A plate number alone is not enough for a chassis-based enquiry.
Resolve any mismatch before paying for reports. Ask the seller to explain spelling differences, replacement documents or an unreadable identifier; do not guess missing characters. Save the listing and note the advertised mileage, specification and claims about previous damage.
For protected records, ask the owner to apply through their own account or use the service's permitted consent process. Do not ask the seller to share passwords or one-time codes, or approve a login on your behalf. Use information only for legitimate purchase checks, and avoid circulating documents containing personal details.
2. Use official enquiries first
MOI and Abu Dhabi accident enquiries
The MOI Accidents Inquiry presents a chassis-number field and robot verification. The Abu Dhabi Police Accidents Inquiry asks for the chassis number and an image verification code. Enter the identifier exactly and follow the access requirements shown on the live form.
Record the service name, query date and result. These are enquiries into the records available through each service, not a guarantee of every incident in every emirate.
Dubai: RTA Technical Vehicle Status Report
RTA's individual Technical Vehicle Status Report service describes historical information such as ownership history and insurance validity. It explicitly excludes vehicle accident data. The owner must consent to disclosure; the listed eligible applicants have a Dubai Traffic File. Follow the live service's account and vehicle-selection requirements.
RTA warns that information can be incomplete. Read the report's actual contents rather than assuming it includes every inspection, mileage entry or maintenance visit. Its terms restrict use to personal purposes and prohibit resale or publication. It is not an inspection certificate for licensing.
Fee and request route: RTA lists AED 120, made up of AED 100 for the report plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fees. On the RTA website, log in, select the vehicle, then choose Vehicle History Report under Vehicle Licensing Services. Pay and receive the report by email or download it from Certificates in your dashboard. The listed service time is one working day; confirm the fee and available report summary before payment.
3. Build a dated paper trail
Request service invoices, earlier inspection results and any repair records the seller can provide. With the owner's permission, ask the issuing workshop or dealer to verify relevant entries through its own disclosure process. A stamped booklet is a starting point, not independent confirmation of every job.
- Mileage: list each dated reading beside its source. Ask for an explanation of a lower later reading, a unit change or a replacement instrument cluster.
- Repairs: compare the recorded work with the seller's description. Ask for supporting invoices and photographs, then give them to your inspector.
- Gaps: identify periods with no documents. Missing paperwork leaves uncertainty; it does not by itself prove neglect or concealment.
4. Investigate imported cars separately
Ask where the car was first supplied and request export, import and available overseas documents. Do not assume a UAE enquiry explains its life before arrival. Match every overseas record or auction image to the full VIN, not just a similar colour and model.
RTA's linked status-report FAQ also lists additional-fee information for imports from Japan, Europe and the United States. Ask RTA what is available for this VIN and what it costs; do not assume overseas accident or maintenance records are included.
If considering an optional commercial history report, first check the provider's stated data sources, relevance to that VIN, sample output and price. A paid report is still a records product, not a physical inspection. No provider can fill an undocumented period simply by charging for a search.
5. Turn discrepancies into buying decisions
Make a short list of unresolved questions for the seller and inspector. An accident entry needs context about damage and repair quality; a no-record result is not proof of no damage. If the identifier cannot be reconciled or the seller refuses reasonable verification, pause the purchase rather than explaining the uncertainty away.
Before an unconditional payment, agree in writing how inspection findings affect the deal and any deposit. Keep history review separate from the vehicle transfer test and ownership paperwork. Use the document checklist to prepare for the transaction, then check the receiving authority's current requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does the RTA history report include accidents?
No. The current individual Technical Vehicle Status Report service explicitly excludes vehicle accident data. Use the appropriate official accident enquiries separately.
Is a no-record result enough to buy the car?
No. It only describes that enquiry's result. Check the documents and arrange a physical inspection; unrecorded damage and mechanical faults can remain.
Can I check protected records without the owner?
Follow each service's permission rules. RTA requires owner consent. Ask the owner to use the approved process instead of sharing login credentials.
