Car Registration Renewal in Sharjah: MOI Steps and Fees

Sharjah registrations are renewed through the federal Ministry of Interior (MOI) system. Before you apply, pay all dues on the car, buy 13 months of insurance, and pass the technical test unless the car is new enough to be exempt. You can then renew in the MOI app or website with UAE PASS, or at a service centre.

Open MOI: Vehicle Ownership Renewal

MOI is the official channel. We are an independent guide and cannot renew a vehicle for you.

Primary sources checked: 18 October 2026. Rules and fees come from MOI's Vehicle Ownership Renewal and Vehicle Technical Inspection services. These list federal fees that also apply to registrations in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah; check your emirate's police licensing channels for local arrangements.

What MOI requires

  • All dues paid. MOI's terms require every outstanding amount to be settled, so clear fines before you start.
  • Insurance for 13 months. MOI's terms state the insurance must be 13 months. This is stricter than Dubai, where RTA asks for at least six months.
  • A passed technical test for a used vehicle. New vehicles are exempt for three years (see below).
  • Emirates ID. It is the only document MOI lists for the renewal service. Online access is through the MOI website or app with UAE PASS.

Renewal steps

Online: submit the application and documents, pay the fees, and receive the renewed ownership. At a service centre: submit the documents, fill in the required data, pay and collect the ownership. MOI also lists self-service machines as a channel.

A company vehicle needs the company owner present or, if they cannot attend, a no-objection letter from the company and a signature authorisation for the person applying.

Does the car need a test?

MOI's renewal service says new vehicles are exempt from inspection for three years from the year of manufacture. Its inspection service puts it differently: a new vehicle is not inspected for three years from the date of licensing, under the Traffic Law. A car built one year and first registered the next could reach the end of those two periods at different times. If the renewal screen asks for a test, treat that as the deciding answer for your car, or ask MOI before booking. The new-car exemption guide compares this with Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Where to get the car tested

Sharjah's testing network includes Tasjeel, Shamil and ADNOC centres, from Sharjah city to Al Dhaid and Khor Fakkan. Our Sharjah testing centres guide lists the branches we have matched to public sources, and the Sharjah centre map shows them by area. MOI describes the test as a visit to the inspection centre with your vehicle ownership card and ID; it does not publish an appointment rule, so check the branch's hours before you travel.

For a private car that needs a test, the published fees add up to AED 500: AED 150 for the test and AED 350 for renewal. Insurance, fines and any retest are extra. MOI lists Knowledge and Innovation fees only for Dubai, which is why Dubai's totals run AED 20 higher per transaction. See test fees by emirate for the full comparison.

Timing

A UAE registration lasts up to 12 months, and Dubai's RTA cites a 30-day grace period under the Federal Traffic Law. MOI's service page does not list late charges, so check them in the MOI app before your expiry date. Because the policy must run for 13 months, arrange insurance first; the test and the renewal can then be done within days of each other.

Sharjah renewal FAQ

I live in Sharjah but my car is registered in Dubai. Where do I renew?

With RTA, using the Dubai renewal guide. The rules above are for vehicles registered in Sharjah and the other MOI emirates.

What if the car fails?

MOI lists a retest at AED 50 for every vehicle category. Repair the defects on the report first. Our retest guide covers what to confirm with the centre, including how long the failed result stands.

Do the same rules apply in Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah?

The MOI service lists the same federal fees and conditions. Local service centres and channels differ, so use the guide for your emirate: Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah.
