Retesting a Vehicle After a Failed Test in the UAE

What to do after a failed vehicle test: retest fees in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and MOI emirates, Dubai's no-appointment rule, appeals and what to confirm.

A failed vehicle test identifies defects to repair before reinspection and renewal. Published retest rates are lower than fresh-test rates, but return conditions apply. In Dubai you can also return without booking, and you can appeal a result you disagree with.

Primary sources checked: 18 October 2026. Dubai: RTA inspection service (454), updated 6 October 2026. Abu Dhabi: ADNOC inspection fees and Abu Dhabi Mobility. Other emirates: MOI technical inspection.

What to do after a fail

  1. Keep the report and read every item. Fix what the inspector listed, not only the item you noticed. The failed-test tool explains common report categories, such as brakes, lights, tyres and emissions.
  2. Ask the centre two questions before you leave: how long the failed result stands for a reinspection at the retest price, and where you can return. The current RTA, ADNOC and MOI service pages linked above do not give a return deadline. Shamil publishes its own northern-emirate retest window below.
  3. Repair the car safely. If the defect affects brakes, steering, tyres or lights, consider recovery to the workshop rather than driving.
  4. Return for reinspection. Take the report with you.
  5. Renew promptly after a pass. In Dubai, the pass certificate is valid for 30 days.

Operator fees checked on 19 October 2026: Emarat's Shamil page lists northern-emirate retests as free within 15 days, then AED 50. Confirm your report's return conditions.

For Dubai, Emarat lists the Shamil retest total as AED 70, matching RTA's AED 50 base fee plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation.

The first test costs AED 170 in Dubai and AED 150 elsewhere for a car. See test fees by emirate for the full schedules.

Do you need an appointment?

Not in Dubai. RTA lists reinspection of a vehicle that failed its previous test among the services that need no reservation, even though renewal tests themselves must be booked. No reservation does not mean no queue, so check the centre's hours.

ADNOC and MOI do not publish an appointment rule for retests. Ask the centre that failed the car when you collect the report.

Appealing a result in Dubai

If you believe the result is wrong, RTA allows an appeal to its Technical Inspection Committee:

  • Book the committee appointment through the Vehicle Registration and Inspection Centres.
  • Attend in person, or send your legal representative, and bring the vehicle at the set time and place.
  • The committee decides after five working days.
  • Its decision after inspecting the vehicle is final. You can only submit a new request after fixing all the issues.

An appeal adds time, so it suits a clear disagreement more than a minor repair. The official pages for Abu Dhabi and the MOI emirates that we checked do not describe an appeal route; ask the centre or authority.

Avoid a second fail

  • Get the workshop to check the repaired item against the wording on the report.
  • Ask for the cause to be fixed, not only the symptom: a blown bulb can come from a wiring fault.
  • Check tyres for age as well as tread. RTA treats tyres as valid for up to five years from their manufacture date.
  • Run through the pre-test checklist before you return.

Retest FAQ

Can I retest at a different centre?

The current RTA, ADNOC and MOI service pages linked above do not specify eligible return branches. Confirm the branch and operator conditions on your failed-test report before changing centres; a fresh test may cost more.

Can I renew my registration after a fail?

Not with a failed result. Renewal needs a passed test unless the car is within its new-car exemption. If your registration is about to expire, plan the repair and check the authority's late-renewal charges. A retest booking does not extend the registration or authorise driving an unsafe vehicle.

Will the car pass if I fix everything on the report?

Not guaranteed. The reinspection checks the car as it is on the day, and other defects can appear. Use a qualified workshop and keep the repair invoices.
