Registration renewal & fees
Car Registration Renewal in Dubai: Fees, Test and Steps
Renew a Dubai car registration: when the RTA test is needed, the AED 370 renewal fee, insurance and fines checks, the 150-day window and late rules.
Dubai registrations are renewed with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). For most private cars the order is: clear the fines on the car, make sure your insurance is on the system, pass the technical test if the car needs one, then renew online or at a centre. The renewal itself is instant once those records are in place.
Start Now: official RTA renewal service
The link opens RTA's service page; its Start Now button takes you to sign in. We are an independent guide and cannot renew a vehicle for you.
Primary sources checked: 18 October 2026. Rules and fees below come from RTA's renewal service (582), updated 30 September 2026, and its inspection service (454), updated 6 October 2026. They apply to vehicles registered in Dubai.
Renewal checklist
- Pay the fines on the vehicle. RTA requires them to be settled. Fines on other vehicles in the same traffic file do not block this renewal if they were issued less than six months ago.
- Check your insurance. The policy must already be valid on the day you renew; RTA will not accept one that starts later. RTA asks for at least six months of cover, counting the 30-day grace period. Your insurer records the policy on the traffic system.
- Pass the technical test, if the car needs one. The centre records the result electronically. The certificate is valid for 30 days from issue, so renew inside that window.
- Renew and pay. Use the RTA website, the RTA Dubai app, Dubai Now, the Mahboub chatbot, a self-service machine or a registration centre. RTA checks the insurance and test records before it takes payment. Vehicles that do not need a technical inspection must be renewed through online channels only.
- Keep the e-card. The renewed Vehicle Licence arrives by SMS or email and can be added to Apple Wallet from the RTA Dubai app. A printed card by courier costs extra.
If you own more than one vehicle, RTA makes you renew or remove the one that expires first.
Does your car need a test first?
A used car needs a passed technical test before each renewal. The exception is a new private car, which RTA describes in two places:
- The renewal service says a private car bought from a local authorised dealer can be registered and renewed for three years without a technical inspection. Its FAQ adds that the car must have been unregistered when bought, have a valid customs certificate, and be renewed before the registration expires.
- The inspection service exempts the first owner of a new car with no mileage for three years from the year of manufacture or the year of registration, whichever comes first.
Any change of ownership needs a technical inspection, even inside those three years. If your car is brand new, you are its first owner and the system still asks for a test, RTA directs you to its Customer Happiness Centre in Deira or Al Barsha. The new-car exemption guide compares how Abu Dhabi and the other emirates count the three years.
Book the test
RTA requires an appointment for a renewal inspection. Book through the inspection service or the RTA Dubai app, choose a centre that tests your vehicle type, and arrive within 15 minutes either side of the slot. RTA estimates 32 minutes to inspect a light vehicle. The Dubai booking guide walks through the steps and the published no-appointment exceptions, and the Dubai testing centres guide lists verified branches.
If you cannot bring the car in, RTA lists mobile inspection for light and heavy vehicles from Tasjeel, Wasel, Al Mutakamela and Aber, for an extra fee.
Fees for a private car
| Item | AED |
|---|---|
| Technical inspection at a centre | 150 + 20 Knowledge and Innovation = 170 |
| Registration renewal | 350 + 20 Knowledge and Innovation = 370 |
| Total when a test is needed | 540 |
| Total for an exempt new car | 370 |
| Optional card delivery | 20 standard, 35 same day, 50 within two hours |
Insurance, fines, late fees, repairs, retests and plate changes are extra. Mobile inspection adds AED 200 for a light vehicle. A motorcycle renewal is AED 200 plus AED 20, and heavier categories have their own rates on the RTA page. The Dubai cost tool breaks down the same private-car figures, and test fees by emirate compares Dubai with the rest of the UAE.
When to renew
- Earliest: up to 150 days before expiry. The new 12 months start from the day you apply, so days left on the current registration are not carried over.
- Grace period: RTA cites the Federal Traffic Law: a registration lasts up to 12 months, followed by a 30-day grace period for renewal. That is time to renew, not permission to drive: Dubai Police's penalty list sets AED 500 and 4 black points for driving with an expired registration, plus 7 days' impoundment once three months have passed.
- Late: late fees apply, set by vehicle category and length of delay. If the car is not renewed within two months of expiry, RTA blocks your traffic file and tells you by SMS.
The renewal date tool works out your window and can add a calendar reminder.
Cases that change the route
- Car registered in another emirate. RTA says a vehicle registered elsewhere, with your residence visa from that same emirate, must be renewed with that emirate's authority. See Abu Dhabi renewal or Sharjah renewal, which also covers the MOI route for the northern emirates.
- Car outside the UAE. RTA requires an inspection certificate from the country where the car is, attested by that country's foreign ministry, the UAE embassy there and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented at an inspection centre within one month. GCC nationals are exempt from the attestation.
- Old tyres. RTA treats tyres as valid for up to five years from their manufacture date, and damaged tyres must be replaced to pass.
- Lost or damaged plates. Use the renew-and-change-plate option. It needs a police report when a plate is lost, and plate fees are added.
If the car fails
Repair the defects on the report and return for reinspection. RTA does not require an appointment for a failed-test reinspection. RTA lists a light-vehicle reinspection at AED 50 plus a separate AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fee; Emarat's Shamil page confirms a total of AED 70. Our retest guide covers appeals and what to confirm, and the failed-test tool explains common report categories.
Retest total cross-checked on 19 October 2026 against Emarat's Shamil fee schedule.
Dubai renewal FAQ
How long does renewal take?
RTA lists the renewal transaction as instant once fines, insurance and the test result are on the system. The test is the slower part: allow for the booked slot, about 32 minutes of inspection for a car, and any queue.
My registration has already expired. Can I still renew?
RTA says re-registration terms apply when ownership has expired. Late fees apply, and after two months the traffic file is blocked. Your insurance must be valid on the day you renew; RTA says you can ask the insurer to set the policy start date.
Do I need a printed Mulkiya?
No. The e-card sent by SMS and email, or shown in the RTA app, is the Vehicle Licence. RTA's Document Validation service can print it if the message never arrived.
